Playing is Designing — The Analog Prototype

When a design studio is developing a game, there is a period of time during which they cycle through multiple incarnations of “the prototype”. Nearly every game can be considered to have had a prototype version. Most design companies today use a rough digital version of the game as a prototype, not taking advantage of a very useful and cheap tool available to them: The Analog Prototype.

What Is the Square Root of Cheese?

Impossible to answer? How about something easier… What genre is my video game?

This one is a question that often trips me up in my education. I am constantly confronted with genres, like the self-inflicted stereotypes of the video game world. They are a necessary evil and I understand this, but like all stereotypical generalizations, they are sometimes hard to pin down.

Twitterquette - Do U Want 2 Follow Me?

“Advances in computer technology and the Internet have changed the way America works, learns, and communicates.  The Internet has become an integral part of America's economic, political, and social life.”  (Bill Clinton, US President politician porn star some random guy)

So... You’ve created a Twitter account, you realize that you have exactly 140 characters in which to articulate yourself (I can shorten that to “talk”, right?), and you start getting your social networking groove on... Then it happens, you’ve gone from a college communicating level to a preschool level... “OMG tht was CUL u shud follow me & i follow u 2!” (I have 92 characters left so I can add a link to some cat pictures! Sweet!)

“But Tami,” you say, “I don’t want to sound like a stiff. Tweeters don’t follow boring people!”

Too true! There must be a balance between appearing professional and being approachable on Twitter... *cough* Pardon me, on the Twitters. You want to appear to be in the now, be on the up-and-up, and still appear to be intelligent, professional, and worthy of landing your dream job. So how do you tread this tightrope of tweeting?

Progress Report: Need Mesh, Will Ad-Lib

Alright... Content...

*Gathering thoughts*... *Rebuilding paths and lighting*... *Saving changes*...

My team - Team ICE - is making not just a level, we're making a game. It might've initially been intended as a level, but we flew with it and now it's a mini game. We did our mock, our alpha testing, and now we're polishing. I spent a good amount of time last night googling static meshes for UDK without success. Who knew that finding FOOD meshes would be so difficult?

Well I got my iPad2... I have to sneak it away from the kids to get time with it... It's my new baby, and it's hard to believe I once thought of it as useless extravagance. I have my web designery books on it, and my dropbox, and loads of other things *cough*PocketFrogs*cough* and I'm soooo glad that I didn't get it with 3G or I'd have a really nasty bill at the end of the month...

When Everything Needs Your Attention, You Get Nothing Done

Still waiting on Best Buy to get an ipad 2 in of the variety I actually want to purchase. Not right pleased, but there you are.

In the meantime, I'm playing about with CSS some more while I wait for my wonderful webmaster to help me wordpress my design site. (The one I showed you in my last post.) I'm redesigning my portfolio to "pop" more and be a little more fun (and a little less 8-bitty). I'm really putting my CSS styling skills through the wringer with this one, but it's paying off as I'm learning how to optimize things with styling rather than images.

Bit o' a Rant, and Some Sneak Previewness

<rant> So I've been calling Best Buy everyday for the last week and a half checking for an iPad 2. They are out of stock and don't know when they'll have them in again. This makes me sad. I have pdf books that I want to read, I have apps purchased that I want to utilize/play, and I want to have the shineh. </rant>

So I've been looking into getting an iPad 2 and learning mobile development on my own. As much as people hear me go on about how difficult it is to learn UDK and Maya on your own in the time we're given, I'm adding to my workload. Genius, eh? Glutton for punishment? Yes.
